Plans for 2009 Nationals

This summer as we prepare for the Eighteenth Annual National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships to be held in March of 2009, we will be making a number of very significant announcements about four very important projects we are developing. We are faced with numerous hurdles that need to be overcome in order to assure that we remain on course for achieving the goals that have been our focus since I was appointed Executive Director of the NCHBC in 2000. These goals have been foundational in every decision that we make in the administration and direction of the NCHBC. Here is a list of our goals:

1) To host a family event that emphases our Christian heritage.
2) To provide a quality event that families are willing to take a week of vacation to attend.
3) To provide a balanced tournament that:
A. Provides a format that allows all teams to compete with teams at or about their talent level.
B. Provides the top teams a chance to play in a National Championship atmosphere.
C. Provides an opportunity for coaches, players and parents to see what it is possible by seeing the top level teams.
4) To showcase the top talent for college coaches and the media.
5) To demonstrate to others that Homeschool basketball is not behind and our tournament is equal to state tournament caliber.

While I believe we have been making steady strides in achieving all of our goals, we have some serious concerns about making sure goals one and two stay intact. The main hurdles that we need to make sure we overcome are in the areas of financial concerns.

1) The cost to attend Nationals for families continues to increase (hotels and food).
2) Gas prices are getting completely out of hand.
3) Tournament expenses continue to increase (for example we have been informed that officials cost is increasing 20% this year).

I want to assure you that we are committed to not increasing the cost for teams and players to attend. However, we are concerned that families will decide they can’t afford to attend and will start just sending their children with “the team”. We can’t think of anything that would undermine the health of Nationals more than having mom and dad stay home.

As a result we have put together a truly fantastic fund raising project that will help players and teams. We would like to invite every team to participate in this program. This is the first of our four projects.

2009 NCHBC Team Fundraising Project

The project is in conjunction with the launching of the new website www.homeschoolsportsonline.com on September 1, 2008. This will be both a very exciting interactive site and a tool for teams. A brief overview of the website features:

1. Main pages – these pages will feature All-American watch, game of the month, player of the week and other features that are being developed.
2. Team pages – each team/program will have their own page which will include Team Picture, Team Roster and the opportunity to place schedules, game pictures and eventually even game video (which we think will be very important for helping players be recruited by colleges).
3. Homeschoolsportsonline.com will be linked with the Homeschool Sports Insider, HomeschoolBaketball.com and the NCHBC to build traffic of over 1 million hits per year.

The fundraising is centered around the sponsorship of your team through the placement of ads on your team page. There are a number of things that will make this project very exciting and profitable for your team.
1. Your team can use the fundraising to get free player registration, free team registration, free gas cards, free Wilson Evolution Basketballs and even a full sponsorship of your team including Nike uniforms, shoes and accessories.
2. The project is a turnkey so that you do not have any paper work, ad fulfillment or accounting required by your team. When our staff will receive the ads from you we will place ads on the website, maintain the website, send out a thank you letter to the advertiser or a tax receipt to individuals donations to the Foundation. We will also keep all the accounting by team and player, which we will send to you with your check.

Frequently Asked Questions

My team signed up do I need to sign up as an individual?

If a team signs up, it is not necessary for a player to sign up unless they plan to raise funds above and beyond the team funds.

Are the ads for local or national businesses?

The ads will go on your team page so they are geared for local business, family and friends. Remember most people are placing ads to help sponsor you; the ad is just a means for you to approach them and for them to be a part of your basketball season.

Who will place ads?

There are two distinct areas to secure advertisements.

1) Local Businesses – Here are a list of most likely advertisers. We have found that these ads are most easily secured from people that you have some sort of personal contact. This includes people you know from church, do business with on a regular basis or contact through family members. Print Form
A. Professional -- your family Doctor, Dentist, Accountant and others you have done business with for many years.
B. Church – anyone at church that owns a local business including both traditional and network marketing.
C. Work Places – where any member of your family or extended family works. Often an Aunt or Uncle will be glad to ask the business they work for if they see you working diligently.

2) Friends and Family – This category is for donations and the person placing the ad will receive a letter making the contribution tax deductible.
A. We recommend approaching Grand Parents, Aunts, Uncles, older Siblings, long time family friends, former teammates and friends form church.
B. There is a special form for these ads http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/playerads_08-09.pdf
C. If you don’t like to ask for ads this category can be reached by sending letters.

What about the national corporations?

Additional Opportunity – You or your family may have personal contact with a National Corporation, Christian College or Christian organization that would be interested in being a National’s sponsor. These sponsorships start at $2000 and would include an ad on the Nationals website and Nationals program. If you have a contact and would like to connect our sponsorship team we will give you a 25% commission for any sponsorship that is secured for Nationals.

Is this hard to do?

We have witnessed 100% success with this program on a local level. Every player who is willing to approach people has had success and you can too. We have seen many raise more than $1,000. With this program there is no reason for any player to ever pay a player fee as getting one $100 ad is automatic for anyone who makes an effort.

Are there additional benefits?

Learning Tool – I have been the Executive Director for the NCHBC for nine years now. The reason I was able to devote the time and energy was that I was successful in starting businesses. I actually attended Bible College and seminary and I attribute my entrepreneurial spirit to my parents encouraging me to earn the money to attend summer camp through creative means like this program.

Do you have a sales pitch we could use?

The Approach for businesses -- This year our team (team name) will be attending Basketball Nationals in Oklahoma, in order to be able to participate I am take part in a fund raiser. I am selling ad space on our team page of the homeschoolsportsonline website. The website has tens of thousands of hits per month during the basketball season and it is a great way to let people in our community know that you support us and at the same time help me go to Nationals. The ad will appear for up to ten months and cost as little as $10 per month can I count on you for your support?

The Approach for Donations -- This year our team (team name) will be attending Basketball Nationals in Oklahoma City, in order to be able to participate I am take part in a fund raiser. In order for me (or our family) to attend we need to raise enough money to cover our expense. Any money that you donate is 100% tax deductible. I have a form here that explains all the details, can I give you a copy to look at.

Does it make a difference as to how many players are on a team?

All incentives are based on 10 players per team. If a team has more than 10 players we will work with that team individual basis to calculate a way to make the program work for all players once they achieve Bronze Level.

What is the time frame for fundraising?

Sales begin July 1st and end Feb 28th.

When will winners be announced?

Winners will be announced at Nationals. Where it is appropriate we will contact winners prior to Nationals.
